I had promised myself last year that I would never knit a big blanket in the summer months. Summer should be saved for lightweight or smaller projects like lace wraps, socks, hats and even baby blankets qualify, if its not too hot.
But some rules are meant to be broken. Especially when your favorite Sister is turning 50, a half century.....now that's something to celebrate......celebrate with good cheer and a hand-knit blanket. Now that's love!
Even though at times it felt like it was the "What was I Thinking Blanket".....my latest design, Mimic Reversible Blanket is complete, blocked, photograghed and published.
Mimic is a playful take on a traditional pattern of ribbed diagonal lines forming a chevron herringbone texture bordered in seed stitch and is completely reversible. Its accomplished using only knit and purl stitches and the best part is its easy to memorize. This pattern is certain to be a timeless heirloom.
The Mimic pattern is available in two sizes; as a Throw Blanket 50" x 60" and a Baby Blanket 30" x 30". The pattern is available at Ravelry.com.
The larger sized Throw Blanket is knit using an Aran to Bulky weight yarn giving it a wholehearted feel for the entire family to cuddle up in. Some of my favorites are Cascade Eco Wool/Eco +, Cascade 220 Superwash Aran, Cascade 128 Superwash Bulky and Caron One Pound. The heavier weight yarn and the larger needle definitely speed up the knitting.
The smaller sized Baby Blanket is knit using a DK/Sport weight yarn lending itself to a lighter more delicate feel, perfect for the new addition to the family. In my humble opinion, I think Baby blankets should be knit in a yarn that is machine care. These blankets do get a lot of washing and its important to keep it as easy care for Mom as possible, while keeping it soft. Some of my favorites are MillaMia Naturally Soft, Cascade 220 Superwash Sport and Cascade Anchor Bay.
Now that the BIG project is complete, its time to get back to knitting my lace wrap, once I go to the UPS store to send my favorite Sis.
Happy Knitting and Safe Travels!
